The Gampaha District Secretariat received a Bronze Award under the 'State Institutions' category at the Presidential Environmental Awards 2026.
The awards ceremony was held 2026.10.19 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, under the patronage of the Honorable Prime Minister, Ms. Harini Amarasuriya.
Among all District Secretariats, the Gampaha District Secretariat stands as the only one to have received a national-level environmental award in 2026.
The annual Presidential Environmental Awards program is organized by the Central Environmental Authority under the Ministry of Environment. Awards are presented across three main categories—Industry, Projects, and Society—covering a wide range of sectors, including state institutions, the private sector, schools, hospitals, local government bodies (specifically for waste management), non-governmental organizations, police environmental units, environmental NGOs, and the mass media. This award is based on a range of initiatives and activities implemented by the Gampaha District Secretariat over the past two years. These include special programs such as 'Green Team,' 'Smart Home,' and 'Urban Forest'; environmental projects executed through the Environmental Sub-committee; the promotion and utilization of renewable energy; efforts to protect environmentally sensitive zones within the district; environmental research, surveys, and service-oriented projects; the landscaping of the office premises; waste management; the minimization of water and electricity consumption; and initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint.
